Dr. ABHAS MITRA

Adjunct Professor, Homi Bhabha National Institute

Abhas Mitra is an Indian astrophysicist best known for his distinct views on several front-line astrophysics concepts, particularly Black holes and Big Bang cosmology. He is a recipient of the ‘Best Young Physicist’ Prize from the Indian Physical Society in 1989. He has headed the Theoretical Astrophysics division at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai. Google cites him as India’s most frequently mentioned physicist as of 24th November 2014. He will inaugurate our event and deliver a talk on the research/ job prospects of engineering graduates in the field of astronomy, Indian astronomical facilities and on his pioneering research on black holes

 

Dr. BISHNU PAL

Professor, School of Natural Sciences, Mahindra Ecole Centrale College of Engineering

Dr. Pal taught at IIT Delhi for twenty-four years, where he had served as the Head of the Physics Department and the Computer Services Centre. He has had an illustrious academic and research career and has held several prestigious positions in India and abroad including President, Optical Society of India and Associate Vice President, membership council of IEEE photonics society. He is an elected fellow of both SPIE and OSA. He had also received invitations from the Nobel Prize committee, Stockholm to nominate a potential Nobel Laureate in physics in 2010 and 2013. He will grace the occasion by delivering a talk on ‘Light based Technologies, IYL 2015 and Application specific Specialty Optical fibers’

Prof. ASIT K. DATTA 

Retired Professor, Department of Applied Physics and the Department of Applied Optics and Photonics, University of Calcutta

Prof. Datta has had a distinguished academic and research career spanning two decades at the University of Calcutta, from where he retired in 2009. He is currently an independent educational advisor and Guest faculty at the University of Calcutta. His research interests are in photonics, optoelectronics, optical computing and soft computing. 

Dr. RAJIB CHAKRABORTY

Associate Professor and Head, Department of Applied Optics and Photonics, University of Calcutta

Dr. Chakraborty earned his PhD from the Department of Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering, IIT Kharagpur and did his postdoctoral research at Virginia Tech, USA and the University of Virginia, USA. His research interests lie in integrated optics, photonic sensors and nanophotonics. He is a member of the Research Advisory Committee of the Centre for Research in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, University of Calcutta. He is the current treasurer and a fellow of the Optical Society of India and is also a member of OSA and SPIE. 

Dr. A.N.SEKAR IYENGAR

Senior Professor,

Plasma Physics Division
Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata

Prof. Iyengar completed his PhD from the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad. He joined SINP, Kolkata as a faculty member in 1988, where he is currently a Senior Professor at the Plasma Physics Division. His research interests include Non Linear Dynamics experiments in plasmas, time series analysis, electronics, chemical systems and Biomedical Signal Processing. Dr Iyengar has authored numerous papers in journals and conferences of international repute. He will enlighten the audience about the diverse applications of Non Linear Dynamics, including in the field of engineering.
