ABOUT US
The Techno India SPIE Student Chapter is an official student group, comprising students of various engineering disciplines at Techno India, Salt Lake.
The chapter is affiliated to SPIE (The International Society for Optics and Photonics) and was established in accordance with the SPIE bylaws in October 2014. This was just three months before the commencement of the United Nations observance of ‘The International Year of Light’.
The primary objective of the IYL 2015 was to raise global awareness of how optical technologies can promote sustainable development. We, at the Techno India Chapter, in our own little way are striving to raise awareness of how light; the essence of our existence can improve the life of mankind in numerous ways.
In the past year and a half, our chapter has conducted successful outreach activities aimed at middle school students hailing from economically challenged backgrounds. We have also hosted guest lectures by eminent scientists including optical scientist Prof. Toyohiko Yatagai, 2015 SPIE President and Dr. Rajesh Kumble Nayak of IISER Kolkata, who was a part of the international collaborative team which had for the first time directly discovered Gravitational Waves. Our chapter members are continuously striving to build simple but innovative models related to optics, photonics and renewable energy.
Our objectives are:
-
To educate the masses about the pivotal role played by light and how it can be utilised to usher sustainable development in the society.
-
To conduct successful outreach activities aimed at students belonging to marginalized sections of society (e.g. tribals, orphans) of rural India
-
To teach basic science to underprivileged school students by means of interactive demonstrations.
-
To prepare optics and renewable energy based models capable of improving the quality of life.
-
To carry out research in optics, photonics and other related disciplines.
-
To provide a chance for our students to learn and interact with renowned scientists from around the world by organizing guest lectures
-
To establish a platform for students seeking to pursue higher studies in science and technology.
